Hail is the reason most San Antonio roofs get replaced
Central Texas takes hail, and a hail event does not always leave a roof that looks damaged from the ground. Bruised shingles lose granules and fail years later, which is why an adjuster's inspection and a roofer's inspection can reach different conclusions about the same roof. We document what we find with photographs of the actual test squares rather than a summary, so you have something concrete if you are filing a claim.
We will also tell you when a roof does not need replacing. A roof with ten years left and localized damage is a repair, and quoting a replacement for it is how the storm-chasing end of this trade operates.
What we do differently on a tear-off
We tear off to the decking and look at it. Decking that is delaminated, soft, or spanning too far gets replaced and shows up on the invoice as a line item, not as a surprise. Roofing over an existing layer is faster and cheaper and hides exactly the problems that shorten a roof's life.
Ventilation is the other thing that gets skipped. A San Antonio attic in August is punishing, and a roof assembly without adequate intake and exhaust cooks its own shingles from underneath and drives your cooling bill up. We size the ventilation to the attic rather than replacing whatever was there.

- How do I know if my roof has hail damage?
- Often you cannot tell from the ground, which is the problem. Hail bruises shingles and knocks granules loose in a pattern an inspector can identify on the roof surface and in the gutters. Soft metal — vents, flashing, gutter aprons — usually shows dents first and is a good early tell. We inspect and photograph test squares so you have documentation rather than an opinion.
- Will my insurance cover a roof replacement?
- That depends on your policy and on whether the adjuster attributes the damage to a covered event rather than to age. We are not your adjuster and cannot promise an outcome, but we can give you a documented inspection with dated photographs, which is the thing most homeowners are missing when a claim gets denied.
- Can you roof over my existing shingles instead of tearing off?
- It is allowed in some cases and we generally advise against it. Roofing over hides decking problems, adds weight, traps heat, and shortens the life of the new roof. The savings are real but they are borrowed against the next replacement.
- How long does a roof replacement take?
- Most single-family roofs are a one to three day tear-off and install once materials are on site, weather permitting. Decking damage found during tear-off is the usual reason a roof takes longer, which is why we look before we quote where we can.
